Linda,
I want to start a project to protect the hemlocks in the Watauga watershed. This keystone tree is critical to the health og the river and its tributaries. So far I know of two areas along the river where the natural specific predator, laricobius nigrinus has been introduced to establish a long term balance control of the hemlock wooly adelgid, which threatens, and indeed is killing hemlocks throughout the watershed. These sites are at Valle Crucis Park and in Bluestone Wild.

I can work to help enroll people in the effort and raise money and get publicity for this purpose, but I cannot undertake to manage the fund.
Could Riverkeepers act as the umbrella manager of the fund and the project?

I would like to see the Elk involved in its own hemlock project as well, and Watauga Lake, where Ihavwe a small property and plan to introduce "Larry" asap.

Yours for the health of the rivers and the hemlocks,
Lowell Hayes 963-5835
